I really am glad about this little sample test, because I am taking a CogAT test later today. You see, I am 11 years old, (12 in 3 months:D) but I am taking 8th grade and high school classes on my online program.

Sample Test Practice

The questions in our CogAT 8 preparation pack were written using the same format as in the CogAT and can help you understand the test, as well as practice and locate the areas that need strengthening and familiarize yourself with the contents of the test. Before taking a test, it is best to have as much information available about the test as possible. This includes the structure of the test, the conditions (time constraint, difficulty, format), and more.
The CogAT test is divided into different sections known as batteries: Verbal battery, Nonverbal battery, and Quantitative battery. These batteries feature the following subtopics: Picture/Verbal analogies, Sentence Completion, Picture/Verbal Classification, Number Analogies, Number Series, Number Puzzles, Figure Matrices, Figure Classification, and Paper Folding. Each of these subtopics help develop a different skill and it is important to see all the different types of questions, their solutions, and the explanations to avoid having any surprises the day of the test.
The primary levels of the CogAT focus more on picture analogies and picture classification instead of their verbal equivalents. This is to make the questions more intuitive and easier to solve for children that are still learning to read.
In addition to the CogAT, a new test has been released known as the CogAT Screening Form. The CogAT Screening Form consists of the first section in each of the batteries of the original CogAT test. That is to say, Picture/Verbal Analogies (depending on the grade), Number Analogies, and Figure Matrices. Make sure to check whether your child will be taking the CogAT or the CogAT Screening Form and the appropriate level of the test.
TestPrep-Online offers preparation packs for the CogAT Screening Form as well as the original CogAT for many levels. Our practice packs feature many questions in all the different batteries and subtopics of the CogAT and the CogAT Screening Form. Take advantage of our detailed explanations to learn new strategies and solve challenging questions. In addition to this, you can learn a lot about the different questions using our comprehensive study guides for different batteries of the test. Finally, you can also check out our Parent Manual to get all the information available about the CogAT.
Parents also have available a guide about the test that summarizes the information, and provides a strategy on how your child should use the pack.
There are two norms used by the CogAT when scoring results. One of the norms, the age norm, is used to compare the performance in relation to other children of the same age. The CogAT also returns a raw score, which is later transformed into a Standard Age Score (also known as SAS).
You can also check our website for more explanations about the norms, scoring method, contents, and answer any question you may have about the CogAT, or the CogAT Screening Form. If something is unclear, you can always contact us with questions about the test, our platform, or anything you need help understanding.
TestPrep-Online offers:

  • Level specific, full-length practice tests
  • Hundreds of practice questions
  • Study guides for children
  • Parent manuals

Take a look at the sample question below to understand the format of the CogAT, its questions, the difficulty, and the level of the explanations we provide. This sample question belongs to the subtopic 'picture analogies' and for this sort of questions, you are requested to understand the relationship between to images and find which one of the answer choices has the same relationship with a given image.

Sample Question for CogAT 8

The pictures in the boxes on the top belong together in a certain way. What picture belongs with the bottom picture in the same way that the pictures on top belong together?
The correct answer is (A), the candle.
The images on the top row, that is the lightbulb and the lamp, are an example of how two things go together in a certain way. An explanation for this could be that in order to illuminate a room, a lamp uses a lightbulb.
Similarly, in order for a candle to illuminate a room, you need fire, or more specifically, a flame. Notice that the order of the images is important. In every row, the image to the right needs the image to the left. The lamp needs the lightbulb, much like the candle needs the flame.
Even though the kettle needs a flame to function, the function it serves is not the same. The lamp is used to illuminate while the kettle is used to boil water. Finally, the light switch and the flashlight both help illuminate a room, but none of them needs fire to function (the flashlight, for example, needs batteries to function). Therefore, these answers cannot be correct.

Description

CogAT is an assessment test administered to K-12 students in order to measure student's reasoning and problem solving abilities ( in Quantitative, Verbal and Non-Verbal categories)that can be directly linked to academic success. CogAT test scores are used by public school systems to identify and place students in their gifted and talented programs. It is also increasingly used by Private Schools to screen students as part of their highly competitive admission process.
CogAT tests are also administered to understand a student's cognitive strengths and weakness, identify areas of improvement and help them to learn more effectively.
CogAT test can also be used as a gauge to predict a student's performance in an IQ test.
CogatPrep is designed to meet the rigorous preparation needs of the CoGAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) test takers. CogatPrep simulates real test like conditions by testing students in all the 9 categories of a CogAT test with the same number of questions as in a real test.
The free version of the app comes with a test pack containing 39 questions from all 9 test categories. These questions are representative of the test sections and are provided for evaluation purposes. Full Length CogAT Test packs are available for purchase from the Purchase Test Packs screen - Each test pack simulates a real full length Cogat Test with a total of 195 questions from all the 9 test categories of a CogAT test.
Users can create and work simultaneously on up to a maximum of 10 tests. Each test can be created either with questions from a subset or from all of the 9 test categories. This provides flexibility to users to work and improve on specific test categories.
Tests are always started in a timed mode with an option to pause and restart the test. CogatPrep also allows users to take extended breaks and continue the test at a later point of time, without having to start from the beginning.
Once the maximum limit of 10 tests is reached, one or more older tests shall have to be deleted before being able to create a new test.
The app also allows users to navigate to any question in the test, thereby allowing the users to review their work before submitting for evaluation. Once a test is submitted for evaluation, a test result summary is displayed with the following details:
- Total Number of Questions
- Total Number of attempted Questions
- Number of Correct answers
- Number of Wrong answers
- Total time taken
- Test Start Date
- Test End Date
Once a test is submitted for evaluation, the app allows the users to view the answers to every question in the test along with a detailed explanation of the answer. This enables users to compare their answers with the correct answer and understand the reasoning behind it.

Great app for Cogat practice, highly recommended, A++++++

I used this app for my 3rd grade son's Cogat test prep and was extremely helpful. The questions are very similar to the actual test and gave a very good idea how the test is structured. App is available at a fraction of the cost of test prep books available in the market. Other aspect that I liked the most is that you can review the test answers along with detailed explanation and determine which areas the kid needs improvement. Only wish more test packs were available for more practice 😔
Highly recommend this app for Cogat test prep and a no brainer at this price!

In APP purchase did not work

The free version did an excellent job of sampling the types of questions one could expect to find on the test.

Won’t download
